(詳細はInternazionale as runners-up Milan were docked points for their involvement in the scandal. Following the sanctions, Juventus played outside the top flight for the first time in their history, leaving Internazionale as the only Italian club never to have been relegated.
The club's relegation prompted a mass exodus of key players including defenders Fabio Cannavaro and Lilian Thuram, midfielder Patrick Vieira and striker Zlatan Ibrahimović. Other important players such as captain Alessandro Del Piero, Gianluigi Buffon, Pavel Nedvěd, David Trezeguet and Mauro Camoranesi chose to remain. At the same time, a host of young players from the ''Primavera'' team were promoted after winning the Campionato Primavera the previous season and several of them went on to play a part in Juventus' promotion success.
